Cochlear implantation is a surgery performed to restore hearing in people with severe hearing loss, particularly after hearing aids prove ineffective. Cochlear implants can improve patients’ communication and quality of life.

Our team of North American and European Board Certified otolaryngologists conduct a detailed medical evaluation including hearing, speech, and imaging tests to assess the condition of the cochlea and inner ear. In some cases, a balance test may also be conducted to determine if cochlear implantation is a viable option.

At SSMC, we perform cochlear implantation procedures by utilizing minimally invasive techniques to cause minimal to no trauma to the inner ear preserving the hearing and fine structure of the cochlea and restoring the patient’s hearing. We provide cochlear implantation procedures for both sides simultaneously in the same sitting for patients of all ages, starting from 6-month-old infants to adults.

How is the procedure performed?

Cochlear implantation surgery is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision of about 3-4cm behind the patient’s ear, where the device is inserted into a tight pocket.

Thereafter, the surgeon creates a small opening in the cochlea to thread the electrode of the internal device. The incision is then stitched closed so that the internal device lies under the patient’s skin. Following the procedure, patients are required to stay in the hospital for a night to monitor their condition and are discharged the next day.
