Interventional neuroradiology is a subspecialty within Clinical imaging. In this subspecialty, microcatheters (very fine plastic tubes) are used, under imaging guidance, to diagnose and treat various diseases and conditions that affect the central nervous system, head, neck, and spine.

In interventional neuroradiology, physicians insert microcatheters into blood vessels and guide them through the vascular system using advanced medical imaging techniques to the affected areas in the head, neck, or spine. Once in position, these catheters are used to either open up blocked arteries or protect the vessels from rupture and hemorrhage. Other minuscule instruments are also used by interventional neuroradiologists like coils, stents, and clot retrieval devices depending on the patient's condition.

This procedure is minimally invasive as it requires only a tiny incision to be made for introducing the catheters into the bloodstream. This reduces risk to patients, lowers patient recovery time, and minimizes hospital admission.
