The Neurology Division at SSMC is home to a 24/7 state-of-the-art stroke unit which provides multispecialty care from stroke experts with specialty training in: conditions that affect the blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord (cerebrovascular neurologists), brain blood vessel imaging (endovascular surgical neuroradiologists), physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatrists) and emergency medicine.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

With state-of-the-art research and laboratory facilities, our stroke experts use advanced technology and sophisticated imaging tests to accurately diagnose strokes and other cerebrovascular conditions. They work in close collaboration to determine the cause of your symptoms and tailor the most appropriate treatment for you.

Symptoms of stroke include sudden neurological loss such as difficulty speaking, weakness, sudden visual impairment and loss of consciousness due to blocked arteries in the brain or spinal cord or bleeding in the brain.

Treatment

Emergency treatment for stroke depends on whether you are having an ischemic stroke or a stroke that involves bleeding into the brain (hemorrhagic). In the case of an ischemic stroke, doctors must quickly restore blood flow to the brain. This may be done through emergency IV medication and emergency endovascular procedures. Endovascular therapy includes delivering medications directly to the brain and removing the clot using a device called a stent retriever.

To reduce the risk of having another stroke or transient ischemic attack, your doctor may recommend a procedure to open up an artery that has narrowed due to plaque formation. Options vary depending on the case, but include carotid endarterectomy, or angioplasty and stents.

The SSMC Stroke Center is equipped with the latest technology and equipment – including monitoring devices, neurocritical beds, MRIs, scans, ultrasound machines - to conduct emergency treatment for stroke.
