Dr. Alharthi is a general, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary consultant currently leading the SEHA Surgical Council, having obtained his undergraduate medical degree (MB. BCh. BAO and LRCSPI) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1999. Following his internship at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, he obtained memberships in the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Dr. Alharthi joined Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, for surgical residency training and obtained a fellowship from the College of Surgeons of South Africa in 2010. Following a two-year fellowship in HPB/GI surgery, he was awarded a subspecialty certificate in surgical gastroenterology from the College of Surgeons of South Africa in May 2013 as well as a clinical fellowship in HPB surgery from the University of Cape Town.
After returning to the UAE, Dr. Alharthi established a destination referral center for gastrointestinal/oncology surgery. This center treated complex GI/hepatobiliary surgeries, bile duct injuries, soft tissue tumours, abdominal wall hernias and open abdomen reconstructions. Additionally, he introduced cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy to the UAE. Dr. Alharthi has played a vital role in promoting laparoscopic surgery and robotic surgery in the UAE, and he continues to perform 500 major surgeries annually.
Furthermore, he is heavily involved in teaching medical students and training surgical residents, as well as leading and conducting research. He chairs the surgical department at SSMC and leads numerous committees, including the surgical and procedural committee, the Emiratization committee, and quality improvement.
